‘Appropriate Response’ by Mario Klingemann sells for 95.000 € (~$110,000 USD).
The work was presented with Onkaos at Art Basel Zero 10, and the sale is for Edition #2 of the 3 Edition + 1 AP artwork installation. Included is a custom trained GPT-2 model, 120 letter split-flap display and kneeler.
It was originally created by Klingemann in 2020, as he anticipated generative language model debates. The installation invokes a musing from the machine’s neural network as the participant kneels. This output can never be repeated and remains unique.
The AP was originally collected by Colección SOLO, Madrid, Spain (2020). Edition #1 was originally collected by The Outpost, Hanoi, Vietnam (2022). The final Edition #3 remains available.
Two additional aspects of the release:
Participants in the interactive display at Zero 10 have thus far claimed 94 unique response tokens at $100 USD each via Verse
5 Raspberry pi 5-based displays were sold during Zero 10 at $1,000 USD each
